A healthy colon can improve your body’s chances against common and serious diseases. The colon is the pathway by which our body’s waste products go through so keeping it in good condition is vital to preventing illnesses such as irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, fatigue and even cancer.

1. A poor dietary habit is one of the major factors that can cause damage to the colon. If most of your meals are lacking in fiber, chances are your colon isn’t functioning as well as it should be. Making changes in the way you eat is extremely important to colon health. Eat more foods that are rich in fiber. Examples are broccoli, green leafy vegetables, and fruits. It is best to take in up to five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Meat, refined foods, and certain dairy products such as pasteurized milk should be taken in moderation. Processed foods and those high in preservatives, refined sugars and saturated fats should be avoided altogether.

2. Adequate fluid intake also makes for a healthy colon. Lack of water can lead to constipation which can, in turn, block the removal of body waste. Drink eight to ten glasses of water a day, or alternate it with fruit juices. Some people recommend juice fasting to help eliminate toxins from the body. Besides cleaning up your colon, juices also lower cholesterol levels. You can use either vegetables or fruit for juice fasting. Some of the best fruits to take in for fasting are apples, carrots, celery, tomatoes, and cucumber.

3. Because we might not be getting the proper amount of nutrients from the food we eat, it is a good idea to drink multivitamins as a supplement. Vitamins and minerals help maintain alkaline levels in our body and prevent colon problems. In particular, vitamin D and folic acid have been shown to have a positive effect on the prevention of colorectal cancer.

4. Regular exercise keeps your body organs functioning at their optimum levels and this includes your colon. Being active will also help maintain weight levels as excessive weight could also spell problems for the colon. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise at least three times a week and then gradually increase the duration and frequency according to your needs.

5. Having regular colon cleansing treatments is recommended. There are many types of colon treatments and one of the most popular is colonic hydrotherapy, also called colonic irrigation. Most patients claim that the treatment isn’t painful but if you’re still not convinced, a more natural way to go about it is to use herbs to cleanse your system. Herbal colon cleansing can come in the form of supplements or teas. GP

You’ll know your colon is healthy if you have regular bowel movements. See to it that you go at least once or twice a day. Other signs of a healthy colon include the following:

• blemish free skin
• soft, long, and tubular feces
• the absence of bad breath
• effortless bowel movement
• bowel movement between 18 to 24 hours
• the absence of mucus or blood in the stools
